Haunted places
Haunted houses and manors
The haunted house is a classic of the genre: footsteps in an empty attic, doors that open by themselves, cold spots and voices at night. Some of these houses became famous through psychical researchers – such as Borley Rectory – others through bestsellers and films, like the house in Amityville. In many cases sceptics exposed fraud or mundane causes: creaking structures, carbon monoxide, rats. In others the case was never closed.
