What happened

Leap Castle's tower has stood in the Irish midlands since the Middle Ages, and its history is steeped in violence. After the death of Mulrooney O'Carroll in 1532, a bloody struggle for leadership broke out in the clan. According to tradition, one of the brothers, a priest, was saying Mass for the family when the other burst into the chapel and ran him through with a sword – the priest fell dead across the altar. The room has been known ever since as the “Bloody Chapel,” and lights are said to flicker in its window at night. An oubliette was also found in the castle, into which – so the story goes – prisoners were dropped. In the early 20th century the Gothic novelist Mildred Darby, who lived here, held séances and described meeting an “elemental” – a grey creature the size of a sheep that reeked of decay. In 1922, during the Civil War, the castle was burned. Since the 1990s it has been restored by the musician Sean Ryan, and guests and TV crews still report a Red Lady, the ghosts of two girls and sudden drops in temperature.

Witnesses

Mildred Darby (accounts of séances published in the spiritualist press), later owners, visitors, and the crews of “Most Haunted” and “Ghost Adventures.”

Explanations and hypotheses

The killing in the chapel is known from family tradition and local lore rather than from any court record, although the power struggles in the O'Carroll clan after 1532 are historically attested. The description of the “elemental” comes from a Gothic novelist who deliberately built a literary atmosphere, and the castle's fame grew through her writings. Leap Castle calls itself “the world's most haunted castle” – which is also an effective brand. Historians note that the castle's real history – raids, wars and its burning in 1922 – is dramatic enough on its own.

Legend A story handed down through generations – it can be neither confirmed nor disproved.
