What happened
On the eastern edge of Louisville a railroad line crosses the valley of Pope Lick Creek on a high steel trestle. Local legend says a creature lives in its shadow – half man, half goat (in some versions half sheep). The most common story is that it escaped from a circus freak-show car when a train was derailed here by lightning, and it has taken revenge on people ever since: using hypnosis or a siren-like voice, it lures them onto the tracks to be hit by a train, or it leaps from the trestle onto cars passing underneath. Another version links the legend to Charles “Ches” McCartney, “America’s Goatman,” who travelled the country with a wagon and a herd of goats from the 1930s to the 1980s. The story, passed down through generations of Louisville teenagers, was made into a short film in 1988. Every so often someone climbs onto the trestle at night to see whether the monster is real.
Witnesses
Stories told by Louisville teenagers and residents and passed on by word of mouth; there are no confirmed sightings of the creature.
Explanations and hypotheses
There is no credible evidence that the monster exists – it is an urban legend whose origin cannot be traced. The real danger is the active railroad: freight trains cross several times a day, and there is nowhere to take cover on the narrow trestle. People who have gone onto the tracks have been killed by trains or fallen more than 80 feet (about 25 m) – among them a 19-year-old in 2000, a 26-year-old woman from Ohio who came looking for the monster in 2016, and a 15-year-old girl in 2019. Going onto the trestle is illegal, and firefighters and victims’ families have long urged people to stay away.
Legend A story handed down through generations – it can be neither confirmed nor disproved.
