What happened

Balete Drive in Quezon City is a quiet street of old mansions, named after the giant balete fig trees that once grew here – trees that Philippine folklore regards as homes of spirits. Since the 1950s a story has circulated about a white lady, a “kaperosa” in Tagalog. Most often she is said to be a teenage girl who was hit and killed by a taxi driver at night and buried under a balete tree. Drivers, especially taxi drivers working at night, say they see a passenger in white with a bloodied or featureless face in the rearview mirror, or a woman standing by the road asking for a lift. In other versions she is a student murdered by a taxi driver who is searching for her killer, or a woman abused to death by her family in one of the mansions. For many people in Manila, driving down Balete Drive after dark is still a test of nerve.

Witnesses

Taxi drivers and motorists in Manila; accounts repeated by the Philippine press, television and horror films. No named witnesses.

Explanations and hypotheses

According to local rumor, the legend was invented in 1953 by a reporter in need of a good story. Columnist Deogracias Ortega claimed in 2021 that it was an embellished version of a 1952 magazine article about a real 1949 accident on a nearby avenue. Folklorists stress that the tale combines the worldwide vanishing hitchhiker motif with native beliefs about spirits dwelling in balete trees. Most of the giant figs have been cut down, but the legend survives in popular culture.

Legend A story handed down through generations – it can be neither confirmed nor disproved.
